Take Heed to Yourselves and Do Not Be Faithless
This meditation is based on a passage for November 18, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Malachi 2:1-16
Reflection and Question: “Take heed to yourselves and do not be faithless.” This warning concludes this section of the last book of the Old Testament. That Malachi indicts the priests for their corruption suggests that he is one of them. Every ordained person in the church does well to bow in humility to our failings as outlined in this passage. Also thought provoking is the use of the marriage image for the covenant between God and Judah. The adultery of Judah chasing other gods is clear and yet God stays faithful nevertheless. When you take heed to yourself, how have you been faithless?
Prayer: Eternal God, our intent is to give glory to Your name. Our desire is to guard knowledge. We seek to be bound by the covenant of life and well-being that is found only in You. Only Your help will keep us faithful. Please help us. Amen.
